LAKE STEVENS -- Despite a quick first quarter start by Lake Stevens, Mount Vernon was able to fend off the the Vikings in the final three quarters en route to a 53-46 victory Monday night that sealed the Wesco 4A North No. 2 seed for the Bulldogs.

Up 19-9 at the end of the game's first eight minutes, Lake Stevens was outscored 29-10 in the second and third quarters, shooting just 3-for-26 from the field .

"We had a big first quarter, then we just had a rough middle two quarters," said Vikings head coach Mark Hein. "(Tonight) we just struggled to finish plays and make shots."

Not only were the offensive struggles for the Vikings key to Mount Vernon's victory, but the offensive output by Bulldogs' senior guard Kevin Hofstad -- leading all Mount Vernon scorers with 20 points -- gave Lake Stevens headaches on the defensive end.

"Hofstad was really tough on the perimeter (tonight)," said Hein. "He's definitely a tough matchup. He has the potential to get by you on the dribble. We didn't do a very good job at keeping him in front."

Despite the loss, Hein credited the effort of two of his prominent players on Monday night and the overall play of the Bulldogs.

"Stoen battled all the way through," Hein said. "(Moussa) Sanoh was tough on the glass, he had 12 rebounds tonight. For them Roozen had a double-double (12 points and 12 rebounds). I would just say that they are a good team, with a good inside and outside game that's tough to defend." At Lake Stevens H.S.
