TULALIP — Kyle Jones hit a layin with 3.4 seconds to go to pull Tulalip Heritage even, but Lummi’s Jordan Deardorff drove almost the full length of the court and beat the buzzer with an off-balance shot that gave Lummi the Northwest 1B win and clinched the league title.
The Hawks led by four at the half but trailed by six as the fourth quarter neared its conclusion. Earl Johnson had hit two 3s and the Blackhawks were running a well executed offense.
“They were pretty patient,” said Tulalip Heritage head coach Marlin Fryberg Jr. “(Johnson) is pretty good on offense. We couldn’t get out fast enough. The kid, he is just a good shooter.”
The Hawks refused to relinquish the top spot so easily, however. They started a comeback with the help of a key Shawn Sanchey 3. Then with 15 seconds to go and down two, Jones broke free and made the game-tying shot. After the play, the clock read 3.4 seconds, but that was enough time for Deardorff.
“We had to play tougher defense,” said Fryberg. “That’s the league, but we have a tournament to play. Hopefully we’ll face them again somewhere.”
The loss means Tulalip Heritage finishes second in the Northwest 1B and makes it the No. 3 seed in the upcoming 1B district tournament. The Hawks host Shoreline Christian in the first round at 7 p.m. Saturday.
