LAKE STEVENS — Monroe’s Riley Schelfout and Brandon Gundersen each scored 18 points as the Bearcats knocked off Lake Stevens 62-58 to secure the No. 3 seed from the Wesco 4A North.
With the game tied entering the fourth quarter, both juniors stepped for the Bearcats. Gundersen had nine points in the period and Schelfhout made two late free throws to put the Bearcats up by four and ice the game.
“For them, Gundersen was huge in the fourth,” said Lake Stevens head coach Mark Hein. “He really stepped up and made key baskets.”
Devin Stoen led the Vikings with 17 points, with Dakota Tomson and Ryan Lian each adding 11.
Both teams qualified for the 4A district tournament and both will be playing on the road. The Bearcats face Edmonds-Woodway, while the Vikings travel to Jackson. Both games will be on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
“Obviously both (Jackson and Edmonds-Woodway) are really good, but different types of teams,” said Hein. “Jackson is obviously on a roll. You know you have a plan A and plan B and unfortuately we got plan B. We’re certainly going to make the most of the opportunity. It’s a challenge and hopefully we’ll be up for it.”
