50th Seattle Opera season a winner
In announcing its 50th anniversary season, Seattle Opera said that good planning and generous patrons will allow it to produce a four-opera season as always along with kick-off festivities that includes performances of Wagner's "The Ring" from Aug. 4 through 25.
The 2013-14 season will give opera lovers that satisfying mix of musical styles and varying languages, comedy and tragedy, reality and fantasy.
The season ends in August 2014 with the International Wagner Competition.
The lineup includes:
"La fille du regiment" ("The Daughter of the Regiment"): Oct. 19 through Nov. 2. Social expectations along with revelations are part of this lighthearted comedy involving an orphan who falls in love with a local villager.
"Rigoletto": Jan. 11 through 25. The court jester Rigoletto lets his beautiful daughter down when he fails to protect her from the womanizing Duke of Mantua in this tale of revenge.
"The Consul": Feb. 22 through March 7, 2014. A desperate wife and mother needs a visa to flee a totalitarian nation.
"Les Contes d'Hoffmann" ("The Tales of Hoffman"): May 3 through 17, 2014. Hoffman gets a kick out of telling elaborate stories about the three beautiful women he has romanced.
The season ends Aug. 7 with the International Wagner Competition as finalists, accompanied by a full orchestra, perform two Wagner selections.
