ARLINGTON -- Enter another name in the fast-growing field of candidates hoping to join the Snohomish County Council.

Former Arlington City Councilman Ryan Larsen announced Monday that he's planning to run for the District 1 seat representing north county.

Republican County Councilman John Koster has held the job for 12 years, but must step down at the end of 2013 because of term limits.

Larsen, a Democrat and the younger brother of U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., will be competing against at least two Republican candidates who have announced they're entering the race.

Larsen, 42, served on the Arlington City Council for one term after being elected in 2001. He stepped down when he moved outside city limits. He's also served on the Community Transit Board of Directors and the county's 2006 Charter Review Commission.

A father of two, Larsen works as Anacortes' director of planning, community and economic development. He previously worked as a Snohomish County planner and in the private sector.

Republicans in the race so far include Arlington City Councilman Ken Klein, 33, and longtime Marysville real estate agent Gary Wright, 68.

The official filing period with the Snohomish County Elections Division is in May.
