SEATTLE — Outgoing Interior Department says Secretary Ken Salazar will be in Seattle Sunday to announce a National Park Service initiative at the Wing Luke Museum to recognize the heritage of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
The Seattle Times reported that Salazar will designate the museum as an “affiliated area” of the park service, which could lead to more federal assistance.
National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis and Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell will be on hand for the announcement.
The 46-year-old museum in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District said it’s the nation’s only museum devoted to the Asian Pacific American experience.
The museum is named for Wing Luke, a member of a Chinese immigrant family in Seattle. He was a Seattle city councilman who died in a 1965 plane crash.
