KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The last time Everett played in Kamloops, the Silvertips earned a point despite being on the wrong side of a historical mismatch on the shot count.
Thursday night in Kamloops, the shot totals were more reasonable, but this time it was the scoreline that was crooked.
Kamloops punished Everett for turnovers in the defensive zone, and the Blazers routed the Tips 6-0.
When the teams met on Jan. 23 in Kamloops, the Blazers put 69 shots on net, which was an Everett franchise record for shots allowed. However, a heroic performance by Everett goaltender Austin Lotz got the game into overtime, where the Tips fell 4-3.
On Thursday, the Tips limited the Blazers to 35 shots on goal, but Kamloops opened the floodgates, scoring three of their first four goals after Everett turned the puck over in its own zone.
Cole Ully led the assault for Kamloops (36-15-2-3), tallying two goals and an assist. Tyler Hansen, JC Lipon, Marek Hrbas, Dylan Willick also scored for the Blazers, while Cole Cheveldave earned the shutout in goal with 20 saves.
Daniel Cotton finished with 29 saves in net for the Tips (21-29-1-4), who dropped their fifth straight game. It was the ninth time this season Everett was shut out, including three of the past five contests.
It was an even first period — far different than the 29-6 shot differential in favor of the Blazers the last time Everett played in Kamloops. However, it was the Blazers who got on the board. The Tips turned the puck over behind their own net, and Matt Needham set up Ully in front to give Kamloops a 1-0 lead 5 minutes, 48 seconds into the game.
Turnovers continued to cost the Tips, and the Blazers took advantage of another one 3:20 into the second. Everett lost the puck at its own blue line, and Kamloops quickly converted, Ully just sneaking the puck past a lunging Cotton on a back-door feed from Tim Bozon to make it 2-0.
Kamloops made it 3-0 at 18:00, Hansen scoring from the high slot after Colin Smith capitalized on confusion behind the Everett net.
The Blazers turned it into a rout in the third. It began with another Everett turnover, which led to Lipon putting in his own rebound at 6:52. Hrbas and Willick piled on later in the period to complete the blowout.
