SHORELINE — Behind the 3-point shooting of senior post Masha Shtikel and their control of the offensive and defensive glass, the Shorewood girls basketball teaw defeated Meadowdale to advance in the 3A Girls District 1 Tournament.
Shtikel finished with a game-high 21 points for the Thunderbirds, to go along with her five 3-pointers.
“All of that was in the flow of the offense,” said Shorewood head coach Nine Lowe on Shtikel’s game Friday night. “Nothing was forced. All of her points were huge. … She maintained her composure and really came up huge for us tonight.”
Shorewood came out to an early 19-9 lead in the first quarter, before the Mavericks were able to cut the lead to six in the second. The Thunderbirds then closed out the half with a bucket to give Meadowdale the eight-point halftime advantage. The momentum continued to carry over into the second half.
“We came out like gangbusters in the third,” Lowe said. “(Kayla) Bradley came out with a three on our first possesion.”
Bradley finished with 11 points and after connecting on one of her two 3s on the night, Shorewood never looked back.
With the victory the Thunderbirds go on to host No. 2 seed Ferndale on Tuesday at 7 p.m. due to the Golden Eagles being seeded by Northwest Conference winning percentage against 2A and 1A schools.
“We’ve watched quite a few games on Ferndale (on film),” said Lowe. “It’s going to be a battle. We’re glad we don’t have to go up there. They have a good balance of guards and posts and they’ll press you. They’re a very well coach team.”
