Prep girls basketball: Monroe 49, Edmonds-Woodway 36
"Monroe played great defense on us," said Edmonds-Woodway head coach Duane Hodges. "They held us to 24 percent shooting from the field."
Hodges also lamented the Warriors' free-throwing shooting. Edmonds-Woodway (12-10) shot just 10 for 21 from the line, while the Bearcats converted 16 of 23.
Sidney Eck led Edmonds-Woodway with 13 points, while Seyi Olajoyegbe had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The two teams scored just 14 points each in the first half. Edmonds-Woodway held Monroe to three points in the first to take a seven-point lead, but Monroe (11-11) responded with an 11-4 second quarter to tie the game at the half.
The Bearcats then got hot from behind the arc to begin the second half. Kylie Ferreira, Tiffany Ohlsen and Payton Wangner each hit 3-pointers early in the third quarter to help Monroe seize control. Van Brunt and Smith then iced the game with key baskets down the stretch in the fourth.
"Van Brunt and Smith just killed us in the last four minutes of the game," said Hodges.
Monroe will travel to (Snohomish/Arlington loser) for another loser out game. That contest is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m.
