USC fires offensive coordinator Polamalu

LOS ANGELES — USC running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu, who also was the Trojans’ titled offensive coordinator the last three seasons, has been fired, coach Lane Kiffin confirmed Sunday.
“As we continue to evaluate all facets of our program, including the organization of our staff, we made the decision to go in a different direction at this coaching position,” Kiffin said in a statement on USC’s website. “Kennedy Polamalu is a good coach, a good person and a good Trojan. We wish him and his family the best.”
Though Polamalu held the title of offensive coordinator, the embattled Kiffin was the play-caller and ran the offense for a team that opened last season ranked No. 1 in the nation but finished with a record of 7-6.
Polamalu did not return phone messages seeking comment.
Reports of Polamalu’s firing began Friday, two days after the Trojans signed a recruiting class that included running backs Justin Davis and Ty Issac. Polamalu did not attend an annual recruiting dinner for USC boosters Wednesday, which was national signing day.
Polamalu is the fourth full-time coach — the first from the offense — to depart since the Trojans’ loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.
