Peers raise money for classmate battling leukemia

Student officers with the Brier Terrace Middle School Technology Student Association presented a check for $614 to Becky Trepp, a representative from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, on Jan. 31.

Members of the club designed, manufactured and sold custom holiday ornaments as their fundraiser this year.

The TSA Club chose to donate to the Climbing for Carl team, who are doing the stair-climb at the Columbia Tower Center on March 24 to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Carl Hess was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2011. He is the son of Brier Terrace staff members James and Heidi Sullivan.

Rotary honors ACES, Kamiak students

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club recently named Phillip Janicek, a Kamiak High School senior, and Dustin Richard, a recent graduate of ACES High School, its January Students of the Month.

Phillip is involved in many things at Kamiak, including Pre-Med Club, the tennis team, the Spirit Crew and leadership, all while maintaining an impressive GPA while taking some of the most rigorous courses offered.

Phillip has applied to many universities and is waiting to hear back. He plans to continue on to medical school after his undergraduate studies.

Richard excelled in the classroom and described ACES like “family.” He graduated Jan. 31 and plans to join the U.S. Marine Corps and continue towards a bachelor’s degree.

Ultimately, he would like to become an officer in the Marines.

Whitman students work for good

Rachel Shober of Monroe recently participated in “Whitman Teaches the Movement” a partner project between Whitman College in Walla Walla, Walla Walla Public Schools, and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The goal of the project was to increase awareness about the civil-rights movement among elementary school students.

Shober, the daughter of Jeff Shober and Deborah Nalty, is a graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School and is currently a senior psychology major at Whitman.

Meanwhile, Camano Island native Annelise Osterberg is working with Helpline this spring through an internship at Whitman College.

She will be helping with client intake and organizing a number of community events to raise awareness about hunger in Walla Walla.

Osterberg, the daughter of Dave and Ann Osterberg, is a 2010 graduate of Stanwood High School and is now a junior environmental studies and sociology combined major, an active member of Campus Climate Challenge, and enjoys meditation club.

Students selected for aerospace program

Several local students were among 247 high-schoolers statewide selected for the first phase of the Washington Aerospace Scholars program.

WAS is a free, competitive program focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics aimed at high school juniors, and is affiliated with NASA Johnson Space Center’s National High School Aerospace Scholars program. Its primary goal is to excite and prepare students to pursue careers pathways in STEM fields using a distance-learning curriculum developed in partnership with NASA and the University of Washington.

The first phase focuses on an online curriculum developed by NASA. The top students will continue onto phase two, with a six-day summer residency experience hosted by the Museum of Flight.

Among those selected for phase one:

Glacier Peak: Joseph Guerrero and Mario Guerrero.

Kamiak: Jeevan Gaberria.

Mariner: Spencer Anderson, Japhia Aragon-Millard, Daisy Dominguez, Nahom Seyoum, Reanna Smith, Samuel Hopkins and John Vu Nguyen.

Meadowdale: Anthony Smeester.

Mountlake Terrace: Katherine Higgins.

Bishop Blanchet: Esteban Parreno, (lives in Mountlake Terrace).
