LOS ANGELES — A fire on board a Carnival cruise ship has left 3,143 guests stranded off the coast of Mexico. No one was harmed.
The Carnival Triumph, had a fire in its engine room Sunday as the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the Yucatan coast, Carnival, the world’s largest cruise line operator, said in a statement Monday. The ship’s automatic extinguishing system put out the fire.
Two tugboats will bring the ship to the closest port, Progreso, Mexico, late Wednesday, Carnival said. Guests will be flown back to the United States on chartered aircraft.
All guests will receive a full refund and credit toward another cruise. The next two voyages of the Triumph, on Feb. 11 and Feb. 16 have been canceled. Those guests will receive a full refund and 25 percent discount on future sailings.
The ship had 1,086 crew on board.
