Prep boys basketball: Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace 73, Shorewood Christian 67

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace head coach Patrick Russell apologized for his quiet voice after a loud and intense game against Shorewood Christian on Tuesday night, but at least his Lions made sure it was not in vain.

Cedar Park Christian knocked off Shorewood Christian 73-67 in a 1B Tri-District contest to clinch a regionals berth, the first of Russell’s three-year tenure.

Terry Eun scored 26 points and made four 3-pointers and Micah Patterson added 15 to key the Cedar Park Christian offense.

“Most of our guys have green lights to shoot and (Eun) is definitely one of them,” said Russell. “He was able to get to the rim in the second quarter and finished with euro steps.”

That second quarter proved to be the difference as Cedar Park Christian outscored the visitors 22-9.

“The second quarter was huge,” said Russell. “We changed our defensive approach. We tried zone (at the start of the game) and went back to man-to-man.”

One player Cedar Park Christian had difficulty stopping was Shorewood Christian’s Jordan King. King had a game-high 30 points, including 11 for 12 from the free throw line.

King also played well (21 points) in the two teams’ previous meeting this season — a 75-64 Cedar Park Christian win — but Russell was pleased with how his shorter team handled Kyle Howell, Shorewood Christian’s 6’6” post. Howell scored 22 in the first contest, but managed just nine on Tuesday.

“In the first game, Howell killed us,” said Russell. “Tonight Daniel Schettler played solid defense on (Howell) and made him have to turn to score.”

Cedar Park Christian will play a familiar foe, Tulalip Heritage, in the district semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Mount Vernon Christian High School. The Hawks and Lions have met twice this season, with Cedar Park Christian prevailing both times, including a 90-76 victory at the 1B District Tournament. Russell expects another high-scoring game.

“(We both have) similar styles, like to get up and down,” said Russell. “My expectation is lots of offense.”
