Prep boys basketball: Glacier Peak 56, Shorewood 54

SNOHOMISH — Glacier Peak trailed by as many as 10 points in the second quarter but battled back and stuck with Shorewood through four quarters to pull out the 56-54 win in the 3A Boys District Tournament on Wednesday. The Grizzlies have now completed step one of two since their semifinal loss to Stanwood sent them to the consolation bracket of the 3A Boys District Tournament. They must now face Oak Harbor in a loser-out battle for the tournament’s last regionals berth.

The game was close the entire way, but it could have gotten away from Glacier Peak.

“(Shorewood) definitely had a chance to pull away,” said Grizzlies head coach Brian Hunter.

Instead, Glacier Peak chipped away at the Thunderbirds’ lead, eventually managing to get out in front.

“It really wasn’t one guy,” said Hunter of the steady comeback.

Hunter noted a couple of key free throws by Trey Chambers to make it a one-point game and a tip-in by Zach Pederson after a missed layin that turned into a three-point play — Pederson was fouled and made the free throw — to put the Grizzlies up by two. Dreu Vader also made a pair of free throws after Shorewood fouled him in the backcourt to extend Glacier Peak’s lead to four.

A final field goal by the Thunderbirds cut that the lead to two, but then time ran out on the clock and Shorewood’s season.

The consolation final between Glacier Peak and Oak Harbor takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Jackson H.S.

“It’s exciting. … It’s not often that you get to play for something like this,” said Hunter.
