BOYS BASKETBALL

Mount Vernon vs. Newport

When: Tuesday night, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Newport H.S.
Breakdown: Newport finished the season 13-7, but six of those losses came in Kingco play and the Knights took fourth in the Kingco Crown division behind Garfield, Issaquah and Ballard. In the District 2 Tournament, though, Newport came roaring to life after losing to Bothell in the first round. The Knights beat Eastlake, Ballard -- for the first time in three tries -- and Inglemoor to take third place and keep their season alive. Mount Vernon, which beat Edmonds-Woodway and Monroe on the consolation side of the bracket after losing to Jackson in the semis of the District 1 tourney, must shut down 6-foot-3 junior guard Will Ferris. Ferris is the Knights leading scorer and scored 16 and 15 points in the wins over Eastlake and Ballard, respectively. Newport's sophomore center Calvin Throckmorton is coming on as well, scoring a game-high 19 points in the win over Inglemoor.
Key players: Newport--Will Ferris, G, Jr.; Isaac Dotson, F, Sr.; Miles Fowler, F, Sr.; Calvin Throckmorton, C, So. Mount Vernon--Kevin Hofstad, G, Sr.; Casey Leek, F, Jr.; Andrew Roozen, F, Sr.; Melvin Walser, G, Jr.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lake Stevens vs. Newport
When: Tonight, 5:45 p.m.
Where: Newport H.S.
Breakdown: Not unlike their boys counterpart, the Newport girls finished near the middle of the Kingco Crown division. In the District 2 tournament, the Lady Knights beat Eastlake twice -- in the first round and consolation final -- to punch their ticket to tonight's crossover game against Lake Stevens, which has won seven of eight games since the return of star guard Brooke Pahukoa. The Vikings only loss in that time was to district champ Lynnwood. A great matchup tonight will be Pahukoa against Newport wing Marikah Wright.
