Passenger train service resumes north of Seattle

EVERETT -- Passenger train service has resumed north of Seattle, following yet another mudslide.
BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said service was suspended for 48 hours following a slide that covered the tracks with three feet of mud and debris in Everett on Sunday, but the tracks were back open for passenger service at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Melonas said there have been about 200 mudslides in the rail corridor between Seattle and Everett this winter, and 82 of them have been classified as significant. In 50 cases the slides have blocked at least one track and triggered the two-day ban on passenger service.
Melonas said BNSF continues to monitor the stability of the slopes in the area, and is working to improve drainage and prevent future slides.
