Man seeks $500K in Seattle police force claim

SEATTLE -- Lawyers for a 19-year-old man have filed a $500,000 claim against the Seattle Police Department, alleging an officer used excessive force.
The Seattle Times reported that the claim springs from an Aug.2 incident in which Officer Clayton Powell was captured on video repeatedly shoving Ismail Abdella during a confrontation on a Seattle street. The newspaper says Powell also was captured on separate video at the South Precinct clenching his fist and making a punching motion toward Abdella as the man sat handcuffed in a holding cell.
Lawyer Christopher Carney filed the claim Wednesday.
The city attorney's office declined comment. The Times said the office continues to review the case to determine whether Powell should be criminally charged.
No charge against Abdella was referred by police to the city attorney's office.
