MANSON -- A cougar killed a dog and knocked down a woman early Friday in Manson before it was shot and killed by a Chelan County sheriff's deputy.

Washington Fish and Wildlife Capt. Chris Anderson says the woman in her 60s suffered scratches and required stitches.

The Wenatchee World reported the woman let her small dog out of the house about 2:30 a.m. in the residential area when the cougar attacked.

The woman tried to make the cougar drop the dog and blocked it in an enclosed area of the yard. The cougar knocked her down and hid behind a hot tub. The deputy arrived in 20 minutes and killed the cougar.

Anderson says the cougar was an old, emaciated male in poor health.
