State files complaint against utility in gas leak

SEATTLE -- Washington utility regulators have filed a complaint against Puget Sound Energy related to the 2011 home explosion in north Seattle that injured two people.
The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission investigation found the likely cause was a natural gas leak. The home was destroyed and surrounding homes were damaged in the September 2011 explosion.
The commission is recommending a $400,000 fine against the company for failure to follow certain natural gas safety rules when it responded to leaks in the neighborhood the day before the explosion.
The company has 20 calendar days to file a response.
Then the commission will set a schedule for hearing the complaint to consider whether to impose a penalty and, if so, at what amount. The company is not allowed to pass any penalty costs to customers.
