Vancouver beats Silvertips 1-0 in overtime

VANCOUVER, B.C. — One night the Everett Silvertips knock off the team with the best record in the WHL. The next night the Tips fall to the team with the worst record in the league.

Blake Orban’s overtime goal ended more than 60 minutes of scoreless hockey as the Vancouver Giants beat Everett 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Everett had upset the Portland Winterhawks 4-2 the previous night in a thriller at home, but the Tips never got anything going against the Giants, managing just 13 shots on goal.

However, despite the loss the Tips moved up in the Western Conference standings. By earning a point Everett caught Seattle for seventh place. The Tips hold the tiebreaker by virtue of having one more win. Both teams have six games remaining.

Payton Lee earned the win in goal for Vancouver (19-46-2-0), needing to make just 13 saves to post the shutout.

Austin Lotz made 26 saves in net for Everett (23-37-2-4).

Both teams were playing their fourth game in five nights, and it showed as scoring chances were few and far between.

It was Vancouver that finally broke the scoreless deadlock. In the extra period Orban fired a slap shot from the point through traffic that went in off the post, ending the game.

Everett had the best scoring chance in the first period when Joshua Winquist had Lee beat, but put his shot off the post. The Tips drew iron again early in the second period, this time Ty Mappin having a shot glance off his marker and off the post.

Then it was Vancouver’s time to hit the post. Midway throughout he second Carter Popoff drew iron from in front. Cain Franson then put a slap shot off the post in the third period as it remained scoreless going into overtime.

Second period—no goals. Penalties—Hayer, Everett (unsportsmanlike conduct), 9:18; McEvoy, Vancouver (unsportsmanlike conduct), 16:27.

Third Period—no goals. Penalties—Petryk, Everett (hooking), 1:07; Popoff, Vancouver (checking from behind), 8:59.

Overtime—1, Vancouver, Orban 4 (Kulak, Rouse), 1:47. Penalties—none.

Shots on goal—Everett 5-2-5-1—13. Vancouver 7-11-6-3—27. Power-play opportunities—Everett 0 of 4. Vancouver 0 of 3.

Goalies—Everett, Lotz 14-17-2-1 (27 shots, 26 saves). Vancouver, Lee 12-19-1-0 (13 shots, 13 saves).
