SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Randy Moss appeared to bid farewell to the 49ers on Saturday, tweeting: “Wished we could’ve finished the job!! Thanks for the opportunity an good luck in the future 9ers.”
Moss signed a one-year deal with the 49ers last March, returning from a one-season hiatus. He finished with 28 receptions for 434 yards and three touchdowns in the regular season, making two starts.
Moss added seven receptions for 112 yards and no touchdowns in three starts during the 49ers’ playoff run, catching two of the five passes that came his way for 41 yards in their Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Moss’ largest output came in the season-opening win at Green Bay, when he had four receptions for 47 yards and scored the 49ers’ first touchdown. He hid his displeasure over his supporting role until Super Bowl week, when he also proclaimed himself as the NFL’s greatest receiver ever.
Such comments and his lack of production made it unlikely that he would return to the 49ers for his 15th NFL season. Earlier Saturday, ProFootballTalk.com reported that the 49ers circulated word at the scouting combine that they weren’t interested in re-signing Moss.
Before the Super Bowl, Moss said he planned to play again next season but declined to comment on whether he wanted to return to the 49ers.
Moss will become a free agent March 12.
