Lake Stevens senior Carey Campbell excels in math and hopes to compete in the state track meet in shot put. He will attend the University of Washington next year.

Q: What is your schedule like?
A: I take a British literature class. Then I have weight training class, and I go to psychology class. After that I have AP (advanced placement) stats class. Then, I go to AP government and politics. I end the day with a guitar class. That's my normal school day.
Q: Why did you choose those subjects? They are very broad.
A: I kind of enjoy the teachers. I also liked to study broad topics. I don't know what I want to do as a career, so I thought that will be helpful to have all these classes.
Q: Any special interests?
A: I really enjoy math and science. I know my career will certainly involve math. It comes easy to me. I also like the challenge of the problems. You can sit down and figure it out because there's always an answer.
Q: What's your top priority right now?
A: I already started practicing for track. It is exciting, but I like focusing on school. That's a top priority.
Q: How long have you been in track?
A: Since seventh grade. I got third place last year in state for shot put. Track is the activity I do in my free time.
Q: What are your goals this year?
A: I want to break the school record in shot put of 62 feet 1 inch, and win the state level.
Q: What are your plans for college?
A: I recently signed to go to the University of Washington to throw (shot put) there next year.
Q: Why did you choose to go there?
A: One thing, it was academics. It is a really prestigious school. I went to visit, and I really liked the coaches for track. It's close enough to home, in a sense that I can come back for the weekends, and it is far enough away where I can live on my own and be independent, starting a new chapter.
Q: Do you do any volunteering?
A: I help with the children at the church group every Sunday. I help the pastor in anything that needs to be done like setting up games. The church is Christ the King in Snohomish.
Q: What do you do for fun?
A: I enjoy playing the guitar. I play anything. I practice with the youth church band every Sunday, and we play Wednesdays at the church. It has fairly small attendance.
I also enjoy playing Frisbee golf once a month. I like the competition of playing, and it's also a fun way to hang out with friends. I also play football.
Q: What is your favorite experience so far of your senior year?
A: I would say my best experience is being named football and track captain. It's the culmination of my hard work. It is nice to see all the hard work come together.
