Lufthansa handed Airbus an order valued at $11.2 billion for 100 single-aisle aircraft, the companies said Thursday.
The order consists of 70 of Airbus’ A320 new engine option aircraft as well as 30 of the existing model of A320 jets. Germany’s Lufthansa Group also agreed to buy two additional A380 super jumbo jets.
The $11.2 billion value for Lufthansa’s order is based on list prices, from which jet makers like Airbus tend to discount.
“We are delighted to add again two more A380s to our fleet and together with the 100 new A320 Family aircraft these new jets will contribute to cutting our operational costs significantly,” Nico Buchholz, executive vice president, Lufthansa Group Fleet Management, said in a statement.
The Lufthansa Group already has 10 A380s and 271 A320 family aircraft in service.
The request pushes Airbus close to the 2,000-order mark for its upgraded A320neo aircraft, said John Leahy, Airbus’ chief operating officer for customers.
The Lufthansa Group also said on Thursday that it will purchase six Boeing Co. 777-300 Extended Range jets for Swiss International Airlines. The order, valued at $1.9 billion at list prices, hasn’t been finalized yet.
Also on Thursday, Airbus delivered the 100th A380 jet. The super jumbo was delivered to Malaysia Airlines at Airbus’ delivery center in Toulouse, France. The A380 is in its sixth year of commercial service and is being flown by nine airlines.
