Prep Lax Update: Stanwood’s Ayling scores game-winner in 3OT thriller

STANWOOD – Stanwood’s Kane Ayling broke a 10-10 tie to score the game-winner in a triple overtime thriller to give the Spartans an 11-10 win over Friday Harbor in a boys lacrosse varsity division II game Wednesday at Stanwood Middle School.

Completing a hat trick in the game, Ayling broke from the top and fired a 10-year shot past Friday Harbor goaltender Jacob Jackson ending a scoring drought by the two schools that extended from 5:45 of the fourth through three overtimes.

Down 10-7 in the fourth Stanwood began to mount a challenge to a game dominated by Friday Harbor.

With 9:38 remaining, Joshua Smith scored for Stanwood to narrow the deficit to 10-8.

Just 44 seconds later Karsten Warness found the net to bring the Spartans to within a goal at 10-9.

And with 5:45 remaining, Smith again hit his second of two goals in the game to knot the contest at 10-10.

With multiple opportunities through the close of regulation and into the third overtime, the school’s played end-to-end lacrosse, but failed to score until the 49 second mark of the third overtime.

Stanwood’s Frank Medlicott led all scorers with four gals, while Warness had nine ground balls to lead the Spartan defense.

Friday Harbor’s Dylan Radden and Tate Brumsickle each had three for Friday Harbor.

Strong’s seven goals leads Everett past Meadowdale in boys lacrosse

LYNNWOOD — Ian Strong scored seven goals to lead Everett High School past Meadowdale 18-7 in its boys high school lacrosse opener, Wednesday at Lynnwood High School.

Strong’s seven goals along with an assists, game the Jackson High School senior eight points on the night.

Everett opened with a 3-1 lead in the first, but was quickly matched by a rebounding Meadowdale squad which put up three in the second to force a 4-4 tie at the half.

But the second half Everett ran away with the game scoring eight in the third and another six in the fourth to grab the win.

Jared Hawkins, Elijah Lindstrom of Everett High School and Andrew Shaffer of Archbishop Murphy High all had four for the Everett squad made up of students from six Everett-area high schools.

Jordan Tindall led the scoring for Meadowdale with three goals.

Stadium puts up 20 goals to down Klahowya in boys lacrosse

SILVERDALE – Noah Leonard scored six goals as Stadium rolled to a 20-7 boys high school lacrosse win over Klahowya, Wednesday at Central Kitsap Jr. High School in Silverdale.

Stadium jumped all over the Eagles in the first to take an early 6-2 lead before putting up another four in the second for a 10-5 half-time lead. In the second, Stadium added two and finished with a strong eight to close-out the game.

Aaron Park had three goals, two assists and 13 ground balls to lead Stadium on defense.

For Klahowya, Cody Roberts had three goals and Cory Charvat had 15 saves in goal.

Prep boys tree Owls for second lacrosse win

REDMOND – Sam Kopf and George Anderson scored five goals each to lead Seattle Prep to its second win of the boys high school lacrosse season with a 20-9 defeat of the Overlake School, Wednesday on the Overlake School campus in Redmond.

The Owls kept pace with Prep, which had opened last Friday with a road win over Sammamish-Newport, trailing by just 4-3 after the first quarter. But the Panthers poured it on in the second netting eight goals to take a 12-6 lead into the intermission.

In the third, Prep again pulled away with five more before settling for another three in the fourth to close out the game. The Owls netted just two in the third and one in the fourth.

Kopf added two assists and 13 ground balls and Conner Dennehy had four goals, two assists and seven ground balls to round out top scoring Panthers.

Overlake was led by Colton Umberger and Barrett Jenness, who each had four goals.

Rhodes’ eight goals powers Garfield past Mount Si in boys lacrosse

SEATTLE – Cedric Rhodes scored eight goals to power Garfield to a 15-13 opening game boys high school lacrosse win over Mount Si, Wednesday at Genessee Park in Seattle

The win lifted the Bulldogs to their first win of the season while disappointing Mount Si.

Garfield moved out to a 5-2 lead in the first and then withstood a five-goal second by Mount Si to hold a 9-7 lead at the half.

In the second half, the two squads battled goal-for-goal matching each other 3-3 in each of the final two quarters as the Bulldogs hung on for the win.

Rhodes finished the night with two assists for 10 points, while Jackson Lanning had four goals and four assists along with 12 ground balls.

Mount Si’s Royce Schwartzenberger and Blake Picchena each scored three.

Hale rolls past Vashon to give Snider first win as boy lacrosse coach

VASHON ISLAND – Riley Johnson had three goals and Will Snider connected for two goals and two assists as Nathan Hale powered to an 11-1 season-opening win over Vashon in boys high school lacrosse action, Wednesday at Vashon High School.

The win was the first for first-year coach Drew Snider, who took over the Hale program this spring. Snider, who is on the roster of the National Lacrosse League Washington Stealth, is an O’Dea graduate and two-time high school lacrosse All-American while playing in Washington state.

The Raiders opened scoring early hitting three unanswered goals in the first and adding another in the second for a 4-0 lead at the half. Hale added three more in the third and four in the fourth.

Vashon got on the board in the final quarter with a goal by Caz Moleski to avoid the shutout.

Freshman Weaver nets six to lead Shorecrest lacrosse past Burlington-Edison

SHORELINE – Freshman Briggan Weaver scored six goals to lead Shorecrest past Burlington-Edison 12-9 in boys high school lacrosse action, Wednesday at Shorecrest High School in Shoreline.

Shorecrest jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first and matched Burlington-Edison’s three second-quarter goals to take a 6-4 lead into the half. In the third Shorecrest added two more and withstood a four-goal fourth by Burlington-Edison to hang on for the win.

Weaver added three assists to his game-total for nine points on the night. Goaltender Payton Brooks-Neal had 13 saves for Shorecrest.

Mac Burnett and Peter Isaacson led the scoring for Burlington-Edison with three goals apiece.

TACOMA – Joey and Michael Lucchesi combined for five goals and five assists as Auburn Riverside rolled to its first win of the boys high school lacrosse season with an 18-1 defeat of Bellarmine Prep, Wednesday at First Creek Middle School in Tacoma.

Auburn Riverside scored five in the first and five in the second to build a 10-1 lead at the half, before adding eight unanswered goals in the second half to close-out the game.

Garrett Stockdale scored a lone goal for Bellarmine Prep, a first-quarter score.

MI hat tricks down Lake Washington in boys lax opener

MERCER ISLAND – Justin Rorem and Peter Mahony each tallied hat tricks as Mercer Island opened their 2013 boys high school lacrosse campaign with a 19-5 win over Lake Washington, Wednesday at Islander Stadium on Mercer Island.

The Islanders unleashed eight first-quarter goals and added four more in the second to dominate the first half 12-4. In the third, MI continued their scoring onslaught, delivering six unanswered goals to make it 18-4 going into the final quarter.

In the end, both squads settled for single fourth-quarter scored to round-out the game.

Along with Rorem and Mahony, 10 Islanders found the back of the Kangs’ net, including a two-goal night by Steen Swedstedt, Grant Preisler, Devlin Conway, Evan Condon and cooper Johnson.

Ben Anderson and Hank Schmale each tallied a pair and Zach Taylor had a solo shot for Lake Washington’s scoring.

Sammamish-Newport rebounds for first lacrosse win of the spring

BELLEVUE – Sean Sternberg scored a hat trick as Sammamish-Newport rebounded for their first win of the 2013 boys high school lacrosse season with a 7-6 win over Snohomish, Wednesday at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.

After dropping their opener to Seattle Prep last Friday, Sammamish-Newport overcame a 4-2 half-time deficit, scoring three in the third and another two fourth-quarter goals to overcome a persistent Snohomish squad. It was the first win for first-year Sammamish-Newport head coach Ian Lee.

John Montine had a goal and two assists, while Stuart Sutherland had two goals and Ian Weiss had a goal and five ground balls in the win.

For Snohomish, Gabe Girgus led the way with three goals on the night.

Bainbridge girls drop Overlake behind Brigham’s six scores in lacrosse

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – Paige Brigham scored six goals as the Bainbridge girls lacrosse team defeated Overlake 16-7, Wednesday at Bainbridge High School.

Brigham and team captain Sally Marx contributed nine of Bainbridge High’s 16 total scores on the evening.

Overlake was led on offense by midfielder Zoe Pinczower who scored three goals on the day.

On defensive, Owls goalkeeper Emma Howard recorded three saves, while Spartans keeper Kelly Coffyn totaled four saves.

Snohomish nets 20, cruises past Roosevelt for first girls lax win

SEATTLE – Megan Davis netted four goals as Snohomish collected it first girls high school lacrosse win of the season with a 20-10 victory, Wednesday at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle.

A total of 13 players found their way onto the score sheet as Snohomish put up 11 first-half goals and cruised with another nine in the second to grab the win.

Snohomish goalkeeper Daryia Tagg was a difference maker on defense and held Roosevelt to just five goals in each half. Midfielder Megan Davis led Snohomish in scoring on the day with four goals.

Roosevelt midfielder Adrienne Leonard scored four goals and recorded five ground balls on defense in the first matchup of the season for both teams.

Tagg, the game leader in saves, was able to keep Roosevelt at bay on offense. Goalkeer Ruth Vargas recorded six saves on the day for the Roughriders.

Snohomish (1-0-0) next faces Overlake (1-0-1) in a 5:30 p.m. matchup, Friday, March 15 at Glacier Peak High School. Roosevelt (0-0-1) next faces Bellevue East (0-0-1) in an 8 p.m. matchup, Friday, March 15 at Interlake High School.

Brennan’s seven goals lift Forest Ridge lax over Hale in girls opener

SEATTLE – Kelly Brennan scored seven goals as Forest Ridge earned its first girls high school lacrosse victory of the season, dropping Nathan Hale 21-15, Wednesday at Summit East Playfield in Seattle.

Forest Ridge midfielder Lindsay Stone added six goals of her own as she and Brennan contributed more than half of the team’s 21 total scores.

Haley Kinoshita, Corryn Wetzel, and Joon Peterson each scored four goals on the day for Hale, while Raiders goalkeeper Cali Ashmun recorded eight saves in the opening matchup for both teams.

Forest Ridge goalkeeper Sarah Sutherland had a strong night with 10 saves, but was unable to keep the Raiders at bay.
