The PUD will haul your faulty fridge away for free

That old fridge may be costing you big bucks.

Energy-wasting second refrigerators or freezers can add a couple of hundred bucks a year to your power bill. Snohomish County PUD will haul it away and recycle it for free.

To have a refrigerator or freezer picked up and recycled, it needs to be in working condition and must be between 10- to 32-cubic-feet in size. The program is for Snohomish County PUD customers only. The PUD will only pick up two of the appliances per account.

The collected appliances are recycled at a facility in Everett. More than 90 percent of each refrigerator or freezer is recycled. The PUD says the safe disposal of refrigerators promises to slow, stop or even reverse ozone destruction.

To schedule a free pick-up, PUD customers should call JACO Environmental toll-free at 877-577-0510. To help process your request, please have your PUD account number available.

Another option: Sears also recycles old refrigerators or freezers when you buy a new one at their Alderwood or Everett Mall locations.

People can schedule a free pick-up of an old unit to occur the same day as delivery. Ask a Sears sales associate for details when you purchase the new unit.
