3 mayoral jobs at stake on south county ballots

Voters in south Snohomish County will elect three mayors, 19 city council members and a County Council member on their 2013 ballots.

Brier, Lynnwood and Woodway all will elect mayors; Brier and Lynnwood each will elect four council members; Edmonds and Woodway each will elect three council members; and Mountlake Terrace will elect five council members.

In addition, voters in Mountlake Terrace and the rest of County Council District 4 will elect a replacement for Democratic County Councilman Dave Gossett, who is prevented by term limits from seeking a fourth term.

The only partisan office on this year’s ballot is the one for County Council. Partisan positions appear on both the August primary and November general-election ballots whatever the number of candidates. City and other non-partisan positions with only one or two candidates appear only on the November ballot. Non-partisan positions with three or more candidates appear on both the primary and general-election ballots.

For the County Council position, former Mill Creek City Councilman and Mayor Terry Ryan has registered with the State Public Disclosure Commission as a Democratic candidate. No other candidates have indicated an intent to run.

Registration with the PDC allows candidates to raise and spend money for the primary and general elections. Candidates file for ballot positions May 13-17.

In Edmonds, voters will fill the positions now held by council members Adrienne Fraley-Monillas, Kristiana Johnson and Strom Peterson. Fraley-Monillas and Peterson have announced campaigns for re-election. John and and said when she was appointed that she expected to run for a full term.

In Lynnwood, Mayor Don Gough has not said whether he will seek a third term. City Councilman Mark Smith has said that he will run for mayor rather than run for re-election to the Council, leaving an opening for Smith’s Council seat. Other Council positions on this year’s ballot include the one held by appointed Councilman Christopher Boyer and the one held by Councilwoman Kerry Lonergan-Dreke. Boyer has said that he intends to run for a full term.

Mountlake Terrace, which has a council-manager government, will elect candidates for five of the seven positions on the City Council, including four-year terms for the positions now held by Council members Douglas McCardle, Rick Ryan, Jerry Smith and Kyoko Matsumoto Wright, and a contest for the last two years of the term that Councilman Bryan Wahl holds by appointment. Wahl already has registered his intent to run.

In Brier, the ballot will include a four-year term for the mayor’s position now held by Bob Colinas; four-year terms for the Council positions held by Mike Gallagher, Martin Krienke and Marc Olson; and the two-year council-at-large position held by John Joplin.

Woodway ballots will include the positions held by Mayor Carla Nichols and Town Councilmen Bill Anderson, Kent Saltonstall and Thomas Whitson.
