SNOHOMISH — With Easter only a few days away, a giant plastic egg that’s been laid on several farms and front lawns near Snohomish in recent weeks may have fallen victim to fowl play.
“Evidently I’ve been eggnapped,” said a cryptic note left inside a small plastic egg in Brock Ricci’s mailbox more than a week ago.
None of the eggs, large or small, have been seen in the area since, according to Ricci.
Beginning shortly before Valentine’s Day, a hollow, hard plastic egg about 6 feet long appeared on Ricci’s family farm on Elliott Road south of Snohomish.
It showed up intermittently there, at other farms and on front lawns south of Snohomish. First it was yellow, then white, then blue, pink and purple, in that order, Ricci said.
“This is the longest it’s disappeared for,” said Ricci, 52.
Ricci firmly denies any involvement in the caper. His family grows hay, corn and pumpkins on the farm. Bob Ricci, Brock’s brother, runs Bob’s Corn, Maze and Pumpkin Farm on the property.
Their father, Darrell Ricci, keeps chickens, but family members swear the eggs are not a publicity stunt on their part. Easter is Sunday.
Ricci said his family has questioned friends they’ve suspected of being behind the prank. None have confessed.
Two previous notes were left in the Riccis’ mailbox, each inside a small plastic egg that matched the color of the big one at the time. The notes appear to be in a woman’s handwriting.
The first note read:
I need to be free
I like to roam
You put me in a cage
Now I’m going home
xoxoxo.
The second:
When I left home
I was blue
Gone Sunday morn
my family went Boo-hoo!
Thanks for doing me no harm
Think I feel safer on Ricci’s farm
We like the pink
At least the color doesn’t stink
(Smiley face below).
The Riccis have watched at night to see if they can spy the egg coming or going, so far to no avail.
“If it’s laying low, they may be planning a surprise on Easter,” Ricci said.
