Artists invited to submit entries in Marysville contest
The Marysville Diversity Advisory Committee and Marysville Arts Coalition have joined together to offer the city's first-ever diversity art contest.
The two-dimensional artwork submitted must fit the contest's theme of "Diversity Works: Sharing Similarities, Celebrating Differences," city spokesman Doug Buell said.
The contest is open starting today to all children, teens and adults who live within the general area of the Marysville School District.
The age divisions for the contest are preschool through second grade, third through fifth grade, middle school students, high school students and adults. Contest prizes include a $25 gift card and ribbon for each age division winner.
The deadline for submissions is Aug. 2.
"We wanted to get the news about the contest out there so people could start working on their entries over spring break," Buell said. "Our plan is to use the artwork for the fliers to promote a multicultural fair in September at Comeford Park."
All of the submitted artwork is to be displayed at the fair. The winner of a $300 grand prize is to be named at the fair.
Jodi Hiatt, an arts coalition member, will be one of the contest judges.
"We will be looking for artwork that follows the theme of the contest and I will be looking for originality and the colors used," Hiatt said. "I am very excited about this art contest. It's new to the community, so I hope people will get involved."
Entries need to include the artist's name, mailing address, home phone, email address and, additionally for young people, the artist's age, grade, parent's name and school name.
The city's diversity committee, which developed the contest with support from the arts coalition, was established in 2010 by Mayor Jon Nehring to help identify issues and prioritize support for the community concerning diversity and inclusion, Buell said.
