The Seahawks are close to trading backup quarterback Matt Flynn, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder. Where Flynn is going, however, remains a mystery.

While the Seahawks have maintained all along that they’re more than happy to keep Flynn in 2013, they have also made it known that they would listen to offers, and with Seattle spending quite a bit to add Percy Harvin, Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett, trading Flynn makes sense from a financial standpoint.
Earlier this week, the word was that Jacksonville was the front-runner to land Flynn, but a couple different reports say the Jags decided to pass on Flynn. Oakland is another possibility if the Raiders decide to cut Carson Palmer, and Buffalo could be another landing spot that makes some sense.
If the Seahawks are able to move Flynn and replace him with a cheaper (rookie) backup, that will free up cap space they can roll into 2014, which could make a difference in re-signing some of the young players whose rookie contracts expire in the next couple years, players such as Kam Chancellor, who is a free agent after this season, and Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman, who have two years left on their deals.

CBSsports.com’s Jason La Canfora is reporting that Flynn is indeed headed to Oakland. He also mentions former Bills backup Tyler Thigpen as a possible backup to Russell Wilson.
