MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Glacier Peak scored six runs in the fifth inning to break open a close game and the Grizzlies went on to beat Mountlake Terrace 8-1 in a Wesco 3A South contest.
Grizzlies starting pitcher Tanner Braun threw a complete game, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out 10. Braun also went 2-for-2 with two RBI, including a solo home run. Braun’s performance impressed Mountlake Terrace head coach Andrew Watters.
“Tanner Braun was outstanding on the hill today … he threw all his pitches,” said Watters. “He has a great curveball and was able to keep our hitters off balance most of the day.”
Braun’s homer in the third gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. Glacier Peak then took advantage of three Hawks’ errors in the decisive fifth, which included three straight two-out hits to account for five runs. Casey Welch hit a two-run double, Ty Deckwa drove in Welch with another double and Sean Elledge capped off the inning with an RBI single.
Jason Shevenko hit an RBI double in the sixth for the Hawks.
The victory gave Glacier Peak the season series win over Mountlake Terrace and its significance was not lost on Grizzlies head coach Bob Blair.
“It was very important. I told the guys before the game, and I’m sure Andrew told his kids the same thing, that we need to treat this like a playoff game. It affects seeding and everything.” said Blair.
