New Safeco Field eats

And people though we sports writers had it good, what with the going to all the games and whatnot. But as I learned Wednesday, the real perk is in food journalism. Those guys and gals get paid to try delicious new foods.

So when the Mariners invited media to come check out some of the new offerings that will be available to fans at Safeco Field this season, I felt it was my responsibility—no, my duty—to baseball fans to go make sure this food was worth eating.

And while I’m no food critic, I can safely tell you that the new eats are for the most part quite delicious, especially considering they can be had at a baseball game, not a restaurant. My favorite was the tacos, which will be served in the new Edgar’s Cantina and also a level up at a taco stand. Even vegetarians can feast on a new selection of vegan items, which this usually-skeptical-of-vegan-food writer found more than tolerable (anyone who knows me will be shocked to learn that I actually enjoyed a mushroom-based dish, the Portobello Carpaccio). By the way, even if you’re not hungry or thirsty, Edgar’s is worth checking out just for the Edgar Martinez memorabilia. I mean, they even have the famous “light bat” from the old Eagle Hardware and Garden commercial. All they need now is a whiteboard that says, “I took my geoduck to Puyallup.”

Oh, and if cocktails are your thing, Edgar’s will offer a bunch of mezcal-based drinks from El Zacatecano, a mezcal that Martinez imports.

Of course like any stadium food, this stuff won’t come cheap, but at least if you’re going to overpay for drinks and a meal, rest assured you’ll be overpaying for some mighty tasty food and drinks. I know, because I did my duty to you, the reader, and ate a bunch of that food today. You’re welcome.
