Prep boys soccer: Shorecrest 2, Stanwood 1

STANWOOD -- The Shorecrest boys soccer team held on to beat Wesco 3A North leading Stanwood despite giving up a late goal and then waiting while play was suspended due to a referee's injury.
The Scots (3-0-2 league) needed the road win to keep pace with Glacier Peak which leads the Wesco 3A South at 4-0-1.
Shorecrest took a 1-0 lead toward the end of the first half when a Stanwood player headed the ball into his own goal after a Scots corner kick. They added an insurance goal in the 69th minute when Ben Schoedel took a long pass down the right wing from Ryan Vanderbeen and chipped the ball over the top of the keeper into the left corner of the goal.
Stanwood answered with a 76th minute goal when Nick Smoody got behind the defense and around the keeper to put the ball in. The goal was followed by a long stoppage due to a referee who injured his wrist.
The delay made the final minutes "interesting," as Stanwood tried to find an equalizer according to Shorecrest head coach Drew Thompson, but the Scots "weathered the storm."
"Stanwood is tough to play on their field. They've got the best home-field advantage in our conference. I was proud of our guys for hanging in there," said Thompson.
