Ach du Belieber

Missed that bit in “The Diary of Anne Frank”: Justin Bieber, Canadian pop star and apparent European history buff, was criticized Sunday for a comment he left in a guest book at Amsterdam’s Anne Frank House. Bieber noted that Frank, who was captured by the Nazis and died in a concentration camp in 1945, “was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a Belieber,” the term used for his fans.

The Canadian education system immediately apologized for its obvious failings in teaching history.

History, channeled: Among TV’s best bets this week is “All the President’s Men Revisited,” Sunday on the Discovery Channel, a look back at the classic 1976 film about the Watergate scandal and President Richard Nixon’s fall.

Along with interviews with Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford, as well as the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward and Carl Berstein, the documentary talks with Justin Bieber, who refers to Deep Throat as “a great guy, who hopefully would have been a Belieber.”

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1943, Ayn Rand’s novel, “The Fountainhead” was first published.

It would be almost 70 years before Rand’s cryptic dedication in her novel would be understood: “I love you, Justin; I’m a Belieber.”
