EVERETT — Tuesday’s game was a game of firsts for the Mariner baseball team.
The most important of them being the team’s first victory of the season as the Marauders defeated Lynnwood 6-1 in a Wesco 4A South game at Mariner H.S.
Among the other firsts was Mariner starting pitcher Zach Steen’s first win, which he earned by pitching a complete game while striking out 10 and allowing just four hits.
Leadoff hitter Keelen Degamo also accomplished a Marauders first by hitting the team’s first extra-base hit of the season and finishing 2-for-4 with a double on the afternoon.
“It’s always good to get that first win out of the way,” said Mariner first-year head coach Josh White. “The feeling today in the dugout was a lot different than it had been all season. We’re a loose group in the first place. Getting shellacked (Monday) (against Jackson) was a real reality check for us. But (Tuesday) we were able to carry that (good feeling) the whole way through and we felt we really had a chance to beat Lynnwood … by being in a position to score first … which hasn’t really happened a lot for us this year either.”
