Herald photographer Dan Bates received an Award of Excellence from the National Press Photographers Association during their annual awards announced Tuesday. Bates, who joined The Herald in 1984, was honored for his photographs of life inside the Walter R. Briggs Old Growth Forest near Arlington.
Bates was honored in the Environment Picture Story Category, where other winners were photographs taken for National Geographic, Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund and Getty Images.
The series was also recognized in the photo editing category for the work of former Herald photo editor Justin Best and designer Katie Mayer.
