The 2013 inductees into the Everett Community College Athletic Hall of Fame:
JAMIE FOOTE: Foote played women’s softball at Everett CC during the 2006 and 2007 seasons, earning Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) conference and team MVP honors in both years. Foote also was selected as the EvCC Female Athlete of the Year in 2006 and 2007. As a freshman, she was voted the most inspirational player and was the captain of the team her sophomore year. The Trojans took first place in the Northern Division of NWAACC behind Foote’s .540 batting average. Foote, a graduate of Mountlake Terrace High School, excelled in the classroom as well, posting a 3.53 GPA at EvCC. She transferred to Seattle University, earning numerous academic and athletic awards during her two-year career as a Redhawk. She remains connected to the EvCC softball program as a coach and lives in Lynnwood.
JOHN GARNER: A two-year letterman in both baseball and football at Everett Junior College, Garner still holds the school record for the longest touchdown run (99 yards). He attended the college from 1949 to 1951, and led the EJC baseball team to the state title his sophomore year. While at EJC, Garner also served as the president of the Associated Men Students. Following two successful years at the University of Washington, Garner entered the U.S. Navy, serving two years’ active duty. He worked for the Marysville School District for more than 25 years, and also served on the Snohomish County Council for four years. He lives in Marysville.
JOANN LARSON TIMPONE: Larson Timpone competed as a multi-sport athlete in the 1964-65 school year. She was the leading scorer in basketball, played field hockey and was a member of the state championship doubles tennis team. In 1964-65 she served as the student vice president of the Women’s Athletic Association. She is retired and lives in the Olympia area.
CIARA PAPAC: Papac, a basketball player, competed at the college in 2000-2002. She was selected to the NWAACC’s all-conference team in 2000, and was the college’s female athlete of the year that same year. In her sophomore year, she was the team captain, leading the conference in both total points and assists. Her success led to a full scholarship offer from California State University – Northridge. She returned to the area to coach at the community college level for one year and currently resides in Snohomish County.
BOB WHISMAN: Whisman played golf for Everett Junior College in the 1953 season, earning state medalist honors that year. The golf program was in the middle of a highly successful run of state championships, and Whisman led that 1953 team to a state title. He continued to play during his service in the U.S. Army, earning post and Northern Division championships in 1954 and 1955. Whisman is a five-time Snohomish County Amateur Champion and finalist for the Everett Herald’s Man of the Year in Sports in 1964. He worked as the head golf professional at both Legion and Walter Hall golf courses and still resides in the Everett area.
CINDY YAHNE PETERSON: Yahne Peterson is the EvCC record holder in the 800-meter run and 1500, and her times in the 5,000 and 10,000 are in the top six performances in school history. She ranks as one of the top performers in the history of track and field at EvCC. Peterson went on to compete at Brigham Young University. She is married to a runner and continues to enter marathon events near her home in Utah.
ED PUCK (deceased): Puck had a long and distinguished career as a coach in the city of Everett. He arrived in the early 1950s and coached at North Junior High School, Everett High School and Everett Community College. At EvCC, Puck was the head track coach, head golf coach, and assistant football coach during his tenure. Along with Coach Bill Deller, Puck coached the golf team to two state championships (1969 and 1970). In 1965, he became the college’s director of student activities, retiring in 1976. Puck passed away in 2007.
1953, 1954, 1955 GOLF TEAMS: Three golf teams were selected to enter the Hall of Fame this year. This three-year run of state championship teams produced several of the finest golfers to ever come out of the area, including state medalists Bob Whisman and Art Abrahamson. Coached by Harry Simmermacher, these three teams each won the state title. Abrahamson was the state medalist two times (1954 and 1955) and Whisman earned that honor in 1953. The teams were rarely defeated during these seasons, and many of the players continued to play at the university level. Team members include Don Erickson, Don Lehman, Ed Morrow, Bob Whisman, Van Wilson, Del Bland, Ken Brydges, Miles O’Dell, Art Abrahamson, Jim Cole, Rodney Williams, Bob Brill, Jim Buselt, Gordon Carpenter, John Heller and Ken Mundy.
1959 MEN’S TRACK TEAM: EvCC coach Ed Puck led the 1959 men’s track team to the state title. Four returning letterman from the 1958 team (Len Andreason, Aaron Pascal, Floyd Skinner and Cal Papritz) were part of the record-setting team. The team lost only one meet — to the University of Washington freshman team. Team members included A.C. Chocklon, John Napiontek, Norm Olsen, Bob Sabo, Jerry Blevins, George Bean, Cal Papritz, Pete Johnson, Dave Stackle, Wilbert Johnson, Floyd Skinner, Aaron Pascal, Hilrey Warren, Jim Williams, Ed Bergeson, Gordy Turner, Len Andreason, William Johnson, Freddie Beckwith, Bob Fay and Phil Perry.
1960 FOOTBALL TEAM: EvCC coach Walt Price led the 1960 football team to the state championship with a record of 7 -1. The Trojans’ only loss came at the hands of Yakima Community College. The squad beat highly ranked Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) in the annual Evergreen Bowl, and placed eleven players on the All-Conference team. Price was selected as The Herald’s Man of the Year in Sports following the season. He was assisted by Ed Puck and Paul Blowers.
