Candidate filing for the August primary and November general election started Monday.
The official filing dates are May 13-17, but candidates may file by mail if their declarations of candidacy arrive at the Snohomish County auditor’s office in Everett between April 29 and May 17.
Online filing is open only during the official May 13-17 filing period. Candidates who want to file at the county auditor’s office in Everett during that period are directed to computer terminals and given directions for online filing.
Candidates filing online must submit the filing fee to the county auditor’s office by the May 17 by electronic transfer, by sending a check to the auditor’s office or by taking payment to the auditor’s office.
No filing for a paid position counts without a non-refundable filing fee equal to 1 percent of the annual salary or petitions signed by a number of registered voters equal to the number of dollars in the filing fee.
County elections officials accept mail filings that arrive April 29 through May 10, but the filings don’t become official and aren’t public record until May 13.
A mail filing must include a filing fee or petition.
Elections officials do not accept mail filings that arrive by mail before April 29 or after May 17 regardless of postmark.
Candidates can withdraw their names from the ballot from May 13 through May 20.
Candidates who wish to withdraw their filing from one position and file for another must do it between May 13 and May 17, and they must pay a new filing fee.
Additional information about running for office can be found in the Election Information Guide available on the Auditor’s Office website at www.snoco.org/elections or by calling 425-388-3444.
