Plant sales, fishing, wine and more weekend fun

Pick out some plants: A ton of plant sales are this weekend. Check out this list for one near you.

Go fishing: A fishing derby for kids 12 and under is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Jennings Park. The event is free, but bring a donation for Marysville Community Food Bank. A pancake breakfast is offered for $5 per plate for adults and $3 for children. Prizes awarded by random drawing at the conclusion of the fishing derby. Fishing poles are available for use.

Wine: Sojen Cellars in Everett is downsizing and will be closing its tasting room. They will continue to make room, but will reduce their size. First, though, they want to have a party, which they have called Deadline to Downsize. It’s from 5 to 11 p.m. on Saturday. Woodrush will play from 8 to 11 p.m. They will celebrate with a limited 10 cases of a custom label on their 2010 Cabernet.

For book lovers: Join author Nan Whybark at Uppercase Bookshop, 1118 First St., Snohomish, at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The author will sign copies of her books in her “Irth to Earth Series.” Learn more here.

Roller derby: Everett’s Jet City Rollergirls, along with other teams from around the area and a team from L.A., will compete in bouts on Saturday at the Everett Skate Deck. A special co-ed bout with a Star Wars theme is planned, in a nod to the date (May the Fourth). Parking is available at the park and ride located at I-5 &112th Street S.E., Everett with a shuttle to the Everett Skate Deck. Find more information on the Facebook event page. Tickets are available online. Tickets are $15 for the whole day.

Learn about grass alternatives: Nancy Moore, a native plant steward for the Washington Native Plant Society, will talk about what native plants work well as ground covers. Plants on display can be purchased. The event is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m at the Edmonds Wildlife native plant demonstration garden. More details are here.

Powwow: The Edmonds Community College powwow starts Friday night and continues Saturday. This year, the theme for the annual powwow is “Teachings of the Wolves” and it will be a feast of American Indian singing, drumming and dancing, along with arts and crafts. Find the details in our story here.

Go for a ride: The Camano Climb organized bike ride is Saturday, a scenic 39-mile loop around the perimeter of Camano Island. You can also choose a 24-mile route. Register from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday for $35. More details here.

For women: The Women’s Expo is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Camano Center. There will be more than 70 vendors catering to the needs of women, a martini bar, raffles, a fashion show by Lane Bryant, stand-up paddle board and kayak demos, a DIY demo by JoAnn Fabric and more. Get ready for camping: On Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, Cabela’s will present free hands-on seminars, product experts, demonstrations, conservation partners, and samples. Classes/seminars will include water purification, navigation, survival and safety, camp food and trail riding etiquette. The event is free. Cabela’s is at 9810 Quil Ceda Blvd, Tulalip.
