Free showings of ‘Race to Nowhere’

There are going to be free showings of the documentary “Race to Nowhere” at Edmonds-Woodway High School Theater this weekend. “Race to Nowhere” is a movie that promises to challenge conventional assumptions about the best ways to prepare kids for success.

Here is how to get your free tickets:

I have not seen “Race to Nowhere” myself, but I’m really curious because it includes Wendy Mogel, who is one of my favorite parenting authors. She wrote “The Blessing of a Skinned Knee” and “The Blessing of a B Minus.”

Both of Dr. Mogel’s books are written from a Jewish perspective, primarily for a Jewish audience. I find Dr. Mogel’s outlook on parenting refreshing, but I do have a major concern with her viewpoint.

Dr. Mogel seems to be writing for an extremely affluent audience; the type of people who can afford $30,000 a year for private school and still afford to send their teenager on a humanitarian trip to Africa. That certainly doesn’t describe my family, nor do I know anyone like that in my neighborhood.

That’s why I’m so curious about what “Race to Nowhere” will be like. Is this a movie that will speak to everyone, or just the would-be academic elite?

Please chime in with your comments if you have already seen it!
