MOUNT VERNON — Police in Mount Vernon say a 38-year-old Anacortes man arrested in a bicycle theft also is believed responsible for two recent Mount Vernon robberies.
Lt. Chris Cammock said the man initially tried to evade police Monday afternoon by swimming the Skagit River but the water’s cold temperature made him abandon that plan. The man was not identified.
Cammock said in a statement that the man displayed a knife while stealing the bike, then rode off on it. The victim followed at a distance, reporting the theft to police.
Investigators said the same man is believed responsible for the May 7 robbery at Annie Mae Antiques and the May 9 robbery at the Skagit Valley Food Co-Op.
The man was booked into the Skagit County Jail for investigation of robbery.
