LAKE STEVENS — Lyndsay Leatherman came into the week fresh off a sweep of the throwing events at the Wesco 4A track and field championships. So naturally the Arlington junior was expecting a poor performance at the Wesco/Kingco 4A Bi-District championships.
Wait, that can’t be right, can it?
Well, according to Leatherman, it’s hard to follow a good week with another good week, hence her trepidation about this week’s meet. Well, fortunately for Leatherman and the Eagles, she couldn’t have been more wrong. After winning the javelin and discus on Wednesday, Leatherman made it another triple this week by breaking the meet record in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 3.5 inches.
“I didn’t expect to get all three, because I won all three last week, so I was kind of expecting a bad week,” she said. “But I pulled it out, so I was really happy about that.
“That’s how track works, you have a good week, then you have a bad week. It’s very inconsistent.”
Leatherman, however, was anything but inconsistent, and her three wins played a big part in the Arlington girls winning the team title with 69 points, making the Eagles the only Wesco team in the top five. Leatherman was one of three Eagles in the top four in the shot put along with Marissa Swegle, who finished second, and Jayla Russ, who was fourth behind Cascade’s Paris Flenoy.
And now that Leatherman has put two good weeks together, does that mean she’s beyond worrying about a letdown heading into state? Well, not quite.
“I’m so nervous for next week, it’s unbelievable,” she said.
Nervous or not, Leatherman is not hiding the fact that she has big goals, particularly in the javelin, which figures to be a showdown between her and Monroe senior Ashley Alexander, who has the second-best throw in the state this year at the 4A level behind Leatherman.
“Javelin, I want first place,” Leatherman said. “I want to beat Ashley Alexander, she’s my top competitor.”
Lynnwood’s Jordyn Edwards won the 400-meter dash in convincing fashion, clocking a time of 57.01 seconds that was .83 better than the second-place finisher. Edwards also placed second in the 200 behind Edmonds-Woodway’s Djenne Dickens, who won with a time of 25.08. Dickens placed second in the 100 with a time of 12.35
Other local winners were Snohomish’s Kellianne Cavin, who won the high jump with a leap of 5-4, and Monroe’s Emily Bland, who won the 300 hurdles in 44.82.
