LAKE STEVENS — Cascade’s Kaleb Dobson came into last year’s 4A Bi-District championships not really knowing what to expect, and the then-sophomore surprised himself by qualifying for state in the 110 hurdles and the long jump.
After a year in which he took some big steps forward, Dobson was no longer a mystery, Instead, he had to prove he could perform under the weight of expectations. And he did just that, winning the 110 hurdles, his best event, fairly convincingly, then squeaking out a victory with a final lean in the 300 hurdles.
Dobson trailed Ballard’s Stuart Thomas heading into the final hurdle, but Thomas clipped the last hurdle, slowing him just enough for Dobson to catch him, winning by .04.
“I gave it everything I had when I hit the turn, and just tried to finish strong, on stride,” he said. “I pulled it out because the guy on my inside (Thomas), he messed up on his last hurdle and I got it clean. I finished strong and got first place.”
Dobson’s time of 38.62 in the 300 hurdles was a personal best, but he just missed breaking the school record. He already has Cascade’s 110 hurdles record having broken it multiple times this year, but if he’s going to break the 300 record before his senior year, it will have to come at state.
“I told myself I was going to break both school records this year, so I’ve got to get this next one come state,” he said.
Dobson wasn’t the only double winner of the day. Snohomish senior Christian Linder won the 100 (10.86) and 200 (22.21). For Linder, a pair of victories was a nice bonus on top of returning to state, where he’ll try to improve on a sixth-place finish in the 200, and missing the finals in the 100.
“I just wanted to make it to state, really,” he said. “A win is nice. … My goal is to make the final in both (at state).”
Arlington’s Dan Boyden won the discus, breaking his own meet record with a throw of 171-11, a mark that was nearly 20 feet better than that of second-place finisher Wyatt Meyring of Edmonds-Woodway.
Spencer Roberts of Jackson won the 400 with a time of 48.79. That result was part of a second-place team finish for the Timberwolves, who finished 17 points behind Garfield for the top spot. Cascade finished fifth with 48 points.
