OAK HARBOR -- Do you want to express concerns about late-night Navy jet flights?
Whidbey Island Naval Air Station has a new system for people who want to share their thoughts. A new automated comment-line phone number and email address is expected to be available May 28.
The new phone number is 360-257-6665. The email address is comments.NASWI@navy.mil.
The motivation for the change is that duty operations officers, who used to take the complaint calls, will now concentrate on providing services to air squadron personnel and safety on the airfield, said base public affairs officer Mike Welding in a statement from the Navy on Friday.
At the same time, the public can now provide the Navy with detailed comments, include noise complaints, Welding said.
"This process is already in place at other naval air stations and has improved communications between the public and the installation," Welding said.
The air station's officer on duty will be able to monitor public comments and influence ongoing operations as necessary. Email is the preferred method for comments, "as it gives people an opportunity to expound on their issue or concern, allows people to use a variety of communication devices and is more efficient to monitor," Welding said.
