Well, it seems those Kevin Constantine coaching rumors that surfaced two weeks ago have some legs. The latest from Gregg Drinnan suggests Constantine, who was Everett’s first-ever coach from 2003-07, is the choice as the Silvertips’ new head coach and will be introduced at a press conference Thursday.
I have not received confirmation or denial, either of Constantine being hired or a press conference taking place Thursday, from any sources. I haven’t even been able to get an official “no comment” from the team, since every possible individual who could issue a statement is out of town. But Drinnan, the sports editor of the Kamloops Daily News, is easily the best connected journalist in the WHL, so his words are not to be taken lightly.
As mentioned when the rumors first surfaced, this would be quite the hire for the Tips. Constantine was hugely successful during his stint behind Everett’s bench, taking an unheralded expansion team to the WHL finals and winning three U.S. Division titles in his four seasons. But if it happened it would also be a curious one, since general manager Garry Davidson stated repeatedly he wants an up-tempo offensive team, and Constantine has a reputation as a defense-first coach.
