FERNDALE — A woman at a Father’s Day barbecue near Ferndale was hit in the chest by a stray bullet fired by shooters more than half-mile away.
The Whatcom County sheriff’s office says a resident called 911 Sunday afternoon to report bullets were whizzing overhead. Then he called back saying his daughter had been hit in the chest.
The Bellingham Herald reported that the 23-year-old woman was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Bellingham with critical injuries.
Deputies heard the gunfire and traced the shots to a group of five people on the other side of the Nooksack River. They had been shooting handguns and high-powered rifles. No one was arrested but deputies are still investigating.
