Happy campers

Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh: Nearly 30,000 American kids are attending a special type of summer camp where, instead of archery or arts and crafts, they learn the basics of writing computer code.

At summer's end, the most outstanding campers will receive a certificate of achievement, a T-shirt, and a $90,000-a-year job offer as a National Security Agency contractor.

New start: At a developers conference today, Microsoft will show off Windows 8.1, a free update that tries to address many of the complaints about Windows 8 -- namely, that it doesn't look just like good ol' Windows XP.

Sorry, Microsoft, but no matter how spiffy you make Windows, most people will still be using it to do mind-numbingly boring work in depressing cubicles alongside people they can't stand, all the while counting the moments until they can go home to their iPads.

Shhhh: Their smartphones may be permanently affixed to their palms, but Kids These Days are as likely as older folks to have visited a public library in the last year, a new study finds.

And it's no wonder: Libraries offer free wi-fi and a quiet place to kick back and text your friends.
