Fine art, music mesh at 10th annual fest in Oso

This year, the annual art festival formerly known as Art in the Barn officially changes its name to Art at the Barn.

The new title much more accurately reflects the reality that the barn that once housed the festival is no longer standing but the festival continues in the spot where the barn once stood.

And what a bucolic spot it is.

Art at the Barn takes place at the Yantis family farm in Oso. This fine arts and crafts show is hosted by the Yantis family for the Arlington Arts Council.

The yard where the art is displayed is picturesquely landscaped by Brian Yantis, and shaded by fruit trees in the North Fork valley of the Stillaguamish River.

The show includes photography, paintings, pottery, glass work, jewelry, basket weaving and woodwork.

Though the barn became a casualty of heavy snow and collapsed in 2008, artist Monica Yantis declared: “The show must go on.”

And so it has. This is the 10th year for the art festival.

Art at the Barn is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Yantis Farm, 20412 Highway 530 NE, 12 miles east of Arlington.

Many of the artists showing their works are members of the Arlington Arts Council, a group dedicated to providing quality art experiences to the Arlington community.

There’s also entertainment.

The Old Time Fiddlers will perform from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Earlier Saturday, guitarist Mike Nordine will play some rock favorites.

On Sunday Paul Nyenhuis will play his Native American flutes.

One of the artists showing her works will be pastel artist Vicki Johnson who is the poster art winner for the festival this year. Her poster artwork is titled “Methow Meadow.”

Johnson of Arlington is also a member of the Stanwood Camano Art Guild, and shows her work at a Guilded Gallery in downtown Stanwood.

Would you want to give something as elaborate as this a name as mundane as “bread box”? A French Provincial piece practically demands the French name panetiere.
