National Night Out
National Night Out, the annual event that celebrates neighborhoods and crime prevention, is set for Aug. 6. Many cities will plan activities at local parks. Others encourage people to organize their own safety-themed block parties. People should contact their local police department for more information.
The Lynnwood and Mukilteo police departments in particular are asking people to sign up now to plan block parties.

Storm safety: There hasn't been a lightning death in Washington state since 1996, according to the National Weather Service. Even, so, the agency urges people to be cautious during storms.
A recent Weather Service study found that 64 percent of lightning deaths in the U.S. since 2006 occurred while people were participating in leisure activities. Of the 152 deaths associated with recreation, fishing is tops with 26, followed by camping, 15 deaths; boating, 14 deaths; soccer, 12 deaths; and golf, eight deaths.
Between 2006 and 2012, 82 percent of people killed by lightning were male.
