Venture: Sky Festival coming July 4-7
Index hosts the Sky Festival for four days of fun, July 4-7.
The outdoors festival features clinics and competitions in climbing, running, mountain biking, fly fishing, hiking, kayaking, rafting and canoeing, as well as micro-brewing, Dutch-oven cooking, mushroom picking and much more. Many of the clinics are free.
Evening activities include dinners, movies, a beer garden, music and more. There also are lectures, a kids geocache hunt, a chili cook-off and a river clean-up, among other activities.

Run: Family fun at the Doodle Dash in Everett
The 14th annual Yankee Doodle Dash, a family fun run, offers a healthy start to the July Fourth festivities in Everett. The 10k start is at 8:30 a.m., the 5k at 8:45 a.m. and the 1-mile at 8:50 a.m. from the Everett Family YMCA, 2720 Rockefeller Ave.
Awards follow at 10 a.m., including prizes for best costume and ribbons for all kids who participate in the free Kiddy Doodle Dash at 10:15 a.m.
Registration fees range from $10 to $25. Register online at www.ymca-snoco.org/ydd up to July 1. Registration fees go up $5 after that; late registration beings at 7 a.m. the day of the event.
Watch: Wild movies at Adopt A Stream Center
Snohomish County Parks and Recreation teams with the Adopt A Stream Foundation for a free family movie series, July Wildlife Wednesdays.
The kick-off event is a showing of the animated film “Over the Hedge,” 7 p.m. July 10 in the Northwest Stream Center auditorium, located in Snohomish County’s McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.
While donations benefitting the Northwest Stream Center are always appreciated, the movie is free. However, space is limited. Reservations are required; call 425-316-8592.

Learn: Math tutoring for Edmonds kids
Local volunteers again offer free tutoring this summer for Edmonds School District students in grades 4-10 who struggle in math. Tutoring sessions include morning (9-11:30 a.m.) and afternoon (11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.) sessions weekdays, July 8-Aug. 16.
There are four locations: Cedar Valley, Alderwood Middle, Meadowdale High and Edmonds-Woodway High schools.
Lunch is provided for all students.

Read: Book Buddies helps kids in Mukilteo
Book Buddies, a program for reluctant young readers, runs 3-4:30 p.m. Thursdays, July 11-Aug. 15, at the Mukilteo Library, 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.
Students in second and third grades are partnered with a trained teen volunteer. Accepted students must fill out a reading contract and commit to six of the eight sessions.

Ride: Motorcycle event aids guide dogs
The 11th annual Puppy Putt motorcycle ride to benefit Guide Dogs of America will start between 8 and 10 a.m. July 13 from Sound Harley-Davidson at 16212 Smokey Point Blvd. in Marysville. The charity benefit is sponsored by Machinists Union District Lodge 751.
Riders will head to District 751’s Seattle Union Hall, 9135 15th Place S., where they will meet up with a South Sound group traveling from Lacey, and enjoy food, music and fun.
All motorcycle makes and models are welcome.

Serve: Architectural Design Board
The city of Edmonds is accepting applications for the layman position on the Architectural Design Board, which advises City Council on proposed multiple-family and commercial developments, including site, landscape and building design.
The volunteer position includes meetings at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of each month. The term is through the end of 2014. The position is open until filled.
