AquaSox lose in 12 innings

EVERETT — Shilo McCall’s bases-clearing double in the top of the 12th inning sparked the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes to an 8-5 victory over the Everett AquaSox on Thursday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Two Everett relievers walked the bases loaded with one out. McCall was called upon to pinch hit, and he ripped a double to the center-field wall, driving home all three baserunners.

With the victory, Salem-Keizer caught Everett for the best record in the Northwest League at 15-6. The loss was Everett’s third straight.

Ryan Honeycutt added a two-run homer for the Volcanoes.

Edmonds native Chris Johnson started on the mound for Salem-Keizer. The 2009 Meadowdale High School graduate pitched better than his numbers. Although he allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings, he walked none and struck out seven. Johnson didn’t receive much help from his defense, either, which made four miscues behind him. The Volcanoes finished with seven errors.

Jack Reinheimer and DJ Peterson both went 4-for-6 for Everett.

Everett seemed out of it when Salem-Keizer pushed the go-ahead run across in the top of the ninth inning. With a runner on second with one out, Ryan Jones sent a sharp grounder up the middle that just eluded the glove of a diving Reinheimer at short. Brandon Bednar rounded third and center fielder Michael Faulkner had a chance to throw him out at the plate. However, the ball sailed over catcher Christian Carmichael and Bednar slid in safely to snap a 4-4 tie.

The Volcanoes then got two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth. But Peterson ripped a liner to center for a double. The Salem-Keizer defense did the rest. Pitcher Raymundo Montero’s pickoff attempt at second was way off the mark, allowing Peterson to advance to third. Then Justin Seager topped a ball to third that was bobbled by Bedner for another error, and Peterson scored to send the game to extra innings.

More Carraway

Andrew Carraway’s second rehabilitation start with the Sox didn’t go quite as smooth as his first.

Carraway, on a rehab stint from Tacoma of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League, tossed five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, walking none and striking out three.

While it wasn’t a bad outing for Carraway, it wasn’t as strong as his first rehab start with the Sox, when he threw four no-hit innings. Carraway did up his pitch count from 36 to 66.

Carraway, who played with the Sox on the way up in 2009, is recovering from a back issue. Before suffering the back injury he was 6-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 12 starts with Tacoma. He is not expected to make any more starts with Everett.

Short in the pen

Everett is working a tad shorthanded in the bullpen.

Injuries to Ryan Horstman and Luke Taylor have the Sox stretching their pitching resources. Horstman, the Mariners’ fourth-round pick in this year’s draft, hasn’t pitched since making his professional debut on June 23 because of a sore elbow. Taylor, a Woodinville native, has been out since June 18 because of shoulder tendonitis.

Neither injury is considered serious, and both are expected to return soon. However, their absence means Everett has just 13 pitchers available. Given this is a short-season Class A league, with starters on pitch limits and relievers not used on back-to-back days, that’s a bare-bones number.

“We’re a little bit short,” Everett manager Rob Mummau said. “But getting Carraway for a start helps out, and I think we’ll be fine.”
